~ The Cat's Prayer ~

O my Master,
Do not expect me to be your slave, I have a thirst for freedom.
Do not probe my secret thoughts, I have a love of mystery.
Do not smother me with caresses, I have a preference for reserve.
Do not humiliate me, I have a sense of pride.
Do not, I beg, abandon me, I have a sure fidelity.
I'll return your love for me, I have a sense of true devotion.

The Tortoiseshell Cat

Tiger at Play

Whence hast though then,
thou witless Puss,
The magic power to charm us this?
Is it, that in thy glaring eye,
And rapid movements we descry,
While we at ease, secure from ill,
The chimney corner snugly fill,
A lion darting at his prey?
A tiger at his ruthless play?

Misty Dawn

This Old Cat

I'm getting on in years,
My coat is turning grey.
My eyes have lost their luster,
my hearing's just okay.

I spend my whole day dreaming
of conquests in my past,
lying near a sunny window.
Waiting for its warm repast.

I remember our first visit,
I was coming to you free,
hoping you would take me in
and keep me company.

I wasn't young or handsome,
two years I'd roamed the street.
There were scars upon my face,
I hobbled on my feet.

I could sense your disappointment
as I left my prison cage.
Oh , I hoped you would accept me
and look beyond my age.

You took me out of pity,
I accepted without shame.
Then you grew to love me,
and I admit the same.

I have shared with you your laughter,
You have wet my fur with tears.
We've come to know each other
Throughout these many years.

Just one more hug this morning
Before you drive away,
And know I'll think about you
Throughout your busy day.

The time we've left together
Is a treasured time at that.
My heart is yours forever.
I promise . . . This Old Cat.

There is joy and peace in creating small happiness,
In taking a homeless kitten under my wing;
Feeding, loving and providing for her,
Hearing her purr is worth everything.

The peace that exists in quieting her hunger,
Making her world happy and safe,
Is worth so much more than the world's false highs and thrills,
Is worth more than anything I ever gave.

With all of the pain this world has to offer,
Its ignorance, hate and old gnawing hunger,
There is love in helping a little life.
And there is peace in hearing her purr.

Cat Heaven
by Cynthia Rylant

The way to Cat Heaven is a field of sweet grass
where crickets and butterflies play.

A cat may be late in getting to Heaven . . .
there's so much fun on the way!
But an angel will wait
at the yellow front door,
wait til a kitty
comes home.

And when she arrives,
he'll give her a kiss
and some milk
in a bowl all her own.

There are trees
in Cat Heaven,
trees made just for cats,
trees growing
so green and so high.

But no one gets stuck in a tree
anymore --
if a cat wants down,
she will fly!

And oh the toys,
kitty toys everywhere,
thousands and thousands
go by.

There are buttons and baubles
and small cotton mice --
there is catnip afloat
in the sky!

There are angels,
of course,
with soft angel laps
where kitties can purr
loud and strong.

The angels will rub
kitties' noses and ears
and sing them
a Cat Heaven song.

And when cats are hungry,
there's God's kitchen counter
all covered with
white kitty dishes,
full of tuna and salmon
and mounds of sardines,
and wonderful little pink fishes.

The cats in Cat Heaven
are so loved and spoiled
God lets them all
lie on his bed . . .

He walks in His garden
with a good black book
and a kitty
asleep on His head.

Then when a cat needs,
she may just simply ponder
and watch the blue world deep and wide . . .

She will watch the old house
where she once lived and wandered,
and the people who loved her inside.

All cats love Heaven,
they know the way there,
they know where
the angel cats fly.

They'll run past the stars
and the moon and the sun . . .
to curl up with God in the sky.

Kittens I by J. Newland

I'm Only a Cat

I'm only a cat,
and I stay in my place...
Up there on your chair,
on your bed or your face!

I'm only a cat,
and I don't finick much...
I'm happy with cream
and anchovies and such!

I'm only a cat,
and we'll get along fine...
As long as you know
I'm not yours... you're all mine!

People walk in
and out of your life...
But, cats leave
pawprints on your heart.

Little Ghost Cat

Your footsteps pit-pat
In the hallway of my mind
The kiss of air, whisper-soft purr;
I hear the echos of your purr,
See your bounding shadow everywhere...
And smile through my tears..

Another Cat's Prayer

Now I lay me down to sleep,
I pray this cushy life to keep.
I pray for toys that look like mice,
And sofa cushions, soft and nice.
I pray for gourmet kitty snacks,
And someone nice to scratch my back,
For windowsills all warm and bright,
For shadows to explore at night.
I pray I'll always stay real cool
And keep the secret feline rule
To NEVER tell a human that
The world is really ruled by CATS!

Ode to our Pets...(thanks, Pam)

What would I do without you, my precious furry friends? Part mischief and all blessing, and faithful to the end. You look at me with eyes of love. You never hold a grudge. You think I'm far too wonderful to criticize or judge. It seems your greatest joy in life, is being close to me. I think God knew how comforting, your warm soft fur would be. I know you think you're human, but I'm glad it isn't true. The world would be a better place, if folks were more like you! A few short years is all we have. One day we'll have to part. But you my pet, will always have, a place within my heart...author unknown

Kittens

When kittens were created
the Angels played a part...
within each one they gently placed
a tender loyal heart.

Their friendship creates brightness,
no sunbeam could compare...
  When God created kittens,
He soothed hearts everywhere.

Kittens Kittens

Kittens kittens everywhere
Kittens chewing on my hair
Kittens climbing up my jeans
Kittens hanging from the screens
There's a kitten on each shoulder
Will they do this when they're older?

Kittens fighting on the chairs
Kittens tumbling down the stairs
There's a kitten on my head
There's a kitten in the bread!
There's a kitten in my shoe
I don't believe we just have two!

Golden Cat

By Clara Blair

Golden cat, sleeping soundly on the pillows,
Sleeping soundly, almost soundlessly you purr

In your sleep, purring softly as I touch you
Softly whispering silly soft endearments as you
Sleep, knowing only safety,
softness, care and doting.

Pampered, treasured, loved for what you are
And aren’t, fluffy darling, nature tamed yet wild.

From your mother’s nest I took you, food and shelter
Guaranteed.
Promised to be kind to you, claws and sex
Preempted as things you would not need. For you,
Perpetual semi-childhood, play and rest, security.

Your golden eyes seem calm and knowing. Do you ever
Measure me? Have I kept the unsigned bargain?

Warm and Soft, your muzzle rests gently on my skin. Thick and Silky, your fur rises and falls as you purr your satisfaction.

MEMBER OF THE FAMILY

What would I do without you
My precious, furry friend?...
Part mischief, but all blessing,
And faithful to the end!

You look at me with eyes of love:
You never hold a grudge...
You think I'm far too wonderful
To criticize or judge.

It seems your greatest joy in life
Is being close to me...
I think God knew how comforting
Your warm, soft fur would be.

I know you think you're human,
But I'm glad it isn't true...
The world would be a nicer place
If folks were more like you!

A few short years is all we have:
One day we'll have to part...
But you my pet, will always have
A place within my heart.

Feline of Mine

Soft silky fur, velvet toes
Follow me wherever I go
Luminous eyes, large and green
The guardian of my nightime dreams

Padded paws, tiny pink nose
Scratchy wet kisses, oh no one knows
The joy she brings my life each day
What comfort I feel that she came to stay

Curled next to my pillow
Each night while I sleep
Her warmth fills my bed
Purrs rumbling so deep

She turns 'round in a circle
Each night before bed
Flips her tail in my face
And lays down near my head

Gives a lick to my hand
And a kiss to my nose
Snuggles beside me and
Like a light, out she goes

Her whiskers tickle my face
When I wake
Get up and feed me,
For goodness sakes!

She knows what she wants...
So easy to please
Fancy Feast, catnip and
A warm pair of knees

A chair by the screen door
To watch the birds feed...
Pillows on the porch swing
To sleep while I read

No fancy toys for this
Feline of mine--
Her mousie, a necktie
Suit her just fine

A better companion
Won't be found if you try!
When I need a friend
She's always close by!

When God created kitty cats

When God created kitty cats
He had no recipe;
He knew He wanted something sweet,
As sweet as sweet could be.
He started out with sugar,
Adding just a trace of spice;
Then stirred in a few drops of morning dew,
To keep them fresh and nice.

He thought cats should be soft to pet,
Thus He gave them coats of fur.
So they could show they were content,
He taught them how to purr.
He made for them long tails to wave,
While strutting down the walk.
Then trained them in meow-ology,
So they could do cat talk.

He made them into acrobats,
And gave them grace and poise.
Their wide-eyed curiosity,
He took from little boys.

He put whiskers on their faces,
Gave them tiny ears for caps.
Then shaped their little bodies,
To snugly fit in laps.

He gave them eyes as big as saucers,
To look into man's soul;
Then He set a tolerance for mankind,
As their purpose and their goal.
Benevolent...and ...Generous,
He made so many of them,
Then charged, with fatherly concern,
The human race to love them.

When one jumped up upon His lap,
God gently stroked his head;
The cat gave Him a kitty kiss,
"What wondrous love", God said.

God smiled at His accomplishment,
So pleased with His creation;
And said, with pride, as He sat back,
"At last...I've reached purr-fection!

On a Cat Aging

(From Auntie Carm of the Colecoon Pride)

He blinks upon the hearth-rug,
and yawns in deep content,
accepting all the comforts
that Providence has sent.

Louder he purrs, and louder,
in one glad hymn of praise
for all the night's adventures,
for quiet, restful days.

Life will go on for ever,
with all that cat can wish:
warmth and the glad procession
of fish and milk and fish.

Only-the thought disturbs him-
he's noticed once or twice,
the times are somehow breeding
a nimbler race of mice.

PAWPRINTS

Some furrfriends come into our lives and quickly go.
Some furrfriends move our souls to dance.
They awaken us to new understanding
with the passing whisper of their wisdom.

Some furrfriends make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon.
They stay in our lives for awhile,
leave pawprints in our hearts,
and we are never, ever the same again.

And for our Puppy Friends

God's Friend

When God had made the earth and sky
the flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
the fish, the birds and bees.

And when at last He'd finished
not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine
and give each one a name."

And so He traveled far and wide
and everywhere He went,
a little creature followed Him
until it's strength was spent.

When all were named upon the earth
and in the sky and sea,
the little creature said,
"Dear Lord,
there's not one left for me."

Kindly, the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
and called you dog, My friend."

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master for no heart in the world
is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I lick your hand
between the blows, your patience and understanding will
more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music,
as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your
footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now
a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements,
and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your
feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would
rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the
softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you
are my God, and I am your devoted worshipper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should
not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer.
Feed me clean food that I may be well to romp and play
and do your bidding. To walk by your side and stand ready,
willing and able to protect you with my life should
your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to
deprive me of my health and sight, do not turn me away
from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled
hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest, and I
will leave you knowing with the last breath I draw, my fate
was ever safest in your hands.
